How to Self-Study for AP Exams (2027) — Registration, Best Exams & Study Plan

By Sarah Mitchell · October 30, 2026 · 7 min read

You don't need to be enrolled in an AP class to take the AP exam. Thousands of students self-study every year — to earn college credit in a subject their school doesn't offer, to strengthen an application, or because they simply like the subject. It works, but only if you handle registration early and choose the right exam.

Quick answer: Yes, you can take any standard AP exam without the class. You register through a school's AP coordinator — not College Board — and that school must agree to order your exam, ideally before the November 13, 2026 deadline for May 2027 exams. The best exams to self-study are content-based ones like Psychology, Human Geography, and Macro/Microeconomics.

Can You Take an AP Exam Without the Class?

Yes. College Board allows students who aren't enrolled in a course to register and take the exam. Your score report looks the same as everyone else's — colleges see the score, not whether you took the class.

The catch is logistics: College Board doesn't sell exams directly to students. Every exam is ordered by a school's AP coordinator, so self-studying really comes down to finding a school that will test you.

How to Register as a Self-Study Student

  1. Ask your own school first. If your school offers AP exams, talk to the AP coordinator (often a counselor). Even if your school doesn't teach the course, many coordinators will still order the exam for you.
  2. If your school can't, contact nearby schools. Homeschooled students and students whose schools don't offer AP need to find another school or authorized test center that accepts outside students. Call or email AP coordinators directly — and do it in September or October.
  3. Get registered in My AP. The coordinator will give you a join code or add you to an exam-only section. Make sure you're marked as a self-study student.
  4. Pay the exam fee. It's $99 per exam in the U.S. and Canada ($129 elsewhere) for 2026–27. Schools sometimes add an administration fee for outside students.
  5. Confirm the date, time, and location of your exam. The 2027 exams run May 3–14 — see the 2027 AP exam schedule.

Timing matters most. College Board's ordering deadline is November 13, 2026, and schools set their own earlier cutoffs. After that, a $40 late fee applies until March 12, 2027 — and many schools stop taking outside students entirely once their order is in. Full details: AP exam registration deadline 2027.

Best AP Exams to Self-Study

The best self-study exams have a clearly defined body of content, little lab or project work, and plenty of free practice material. Recent pass rates from our score data:

ExamPass rate (3+)Score of 5Why it works for self-study
Psychology56%16%Mostly vocabulary and concepts; little math; huge amount of free material · difficulty guide
Human Geography53%12%Concept-heavy but intuitive; short FRQs; no math · difficulty guide
Macroeconomics63%18%Small, well-defined set of models and graphs · difficulty guide
Microeconomics62%20%Pairs well with Macro — much of the graphing overlaps · difficulty guide
Environmental Science58%9%Broad but not deep; light math · difficulty guide
U.S. Government and Politics53%12%Finite required list: 15 Supreme Court cases, 9 documents · difficulty guide
Statistics61%16%Good for strong math students; formula sheet provided · difficulty guide

A high pass rate doesn't make an exam easy to self-study — students in the class have a teacher, deadlines, and graded FRQs. What makes these exams good choices is that the content can be learned from a textbook and practice questions alone.

A Self-Study Plan for May 2027

Self-studying takes more total hours than taking the class, because you're replacing a full year of lessons. For one content-heavy exam, plan on roughly 4–6 hours a week:

WhenGoal
By mid-NovemberRegistered with a coordinator; exam ordered
November – FebruaryWork through the course units in order, one unit every 1–2 weeks
February – MarchFinish new content; start official past FRQs with scoring guidelines
MarchFirst full timed practice test — score it with the AP score calculator
AprilSecond full practice test; drill weak units and FRQ types
MayLight review of summary notes; rest before the exam

What You Need

Is Self-Studying Worth It?

It's worth it when the score will earn you something concrete — college credit, placement out of an intro course, or evidence of interest in your intended major. Check how your target colleges award credit first: see do AP classes count as college credit.

It's usually not worth it if it pulls time away from the APs you're already enrolled in. A 5 in your actual classes beats a 3 on an extra exam. If you're unsure how much you can handle, read how many AP classes you should take.

FAQ

Can you take an AP exam without taking the class?

Yes. Any student can take a standard AP exam without being enrolled in the course. You register through a school's AP coordinator, who orders the exam for you.

How do I register for an AP exam if I'm self-studying?

Contact the AP coordinator at your school, or at a nearby school if yours doesn't offer AP, and ask them to order your exam. Do this by October so they can include you before the November 13, 2026 ordering deadline.

What is the easiest AP exam to self-study?

AP Psychology, AP Human Geography, and AP Macroeconomics or Microeconomics are the most popular self-study choices because the content is well defined and doesn't require labs or projects.

Do colleges know if you self-studied an AP exam?

Your AP score report shows your score, not whether you took the course. You can mention self-study on your application if you want to show initiative.

How long does it take to self-study for an AP exam?

Plan on about 4–6 hours per week from November to May for one content-based exam — roughly 100 hours in total.
