The AP Calc BC AB Subscore
AP Calc BC is unique: you also receive an AB subscore (1–5) based on the subset of questions that cover Calculus AB topics. This appears on your score report alongside your BC score.
The AB subscore is based on approximately 60% of the exam content — the questions covering limits, derivatives, basic integration, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
Why it matters: some colleges accept the AB subscore for Calc I credit even if your BC score is below their threshold. Check your target school's AP credit policy.
AP Calc BC Five-Rate: Why So High?
39% of students earn a 5 on AP Calc BC — compared to 22% on AP Calc AB. This is not because the curve is more generous:
- Self-selection: AP Calc BC attracts students who have already mastered AB material. The pool is stronger than average
- The curve adjusts: if the exam is hard, cutoffs drop; if easy, they rise. The 5-cutoff at 68 (63%) is actually similar to AP Calc AB's 70 (65%)

Tips to Score a 5 on AP Calc BC
- Master all BC-only topics: Series (Taylor, Maclaurin, power series), parametric/polar calculus, logistic differential equations, Euler's method
- FRQ partial credit is critical: AP Calc BC FRQs require showing work step by step; you can earn points on a problem even with an arithmetic error
- Series questions are the most common area of weakness — master convergence tests (integral, ratio, comparison, alternating series)
